1: Sony RX0 Camera

The Sony RX0 is tiny, rugged, and waterproof. But while it might look like Sony's answer to GoPro, it packs a surprising amount of high-end features and power.

 

Features:

• Tiny, rugged, and waterproof body.
• Zeiss lens with 24mm focal length (in 35mm equivalent). Aspherical lens, so minimal distortion.
• Excellent image quality for an ultra-compact camera.
• Shutter speed up to 1/32000 second.
• 4K 1-bit 4:2:2 uncompressed video out of the HDMI port.
• It's quirky and is missing some key video features you might expect (eg. 4K).

 

2: Sony FDR-X3000R

Another entry from the Japanese camera giant - and someone who certainly appreciates the need for great action cameras.

Most action cameras are now promising 4K at 30fps, but Sony’s effort is about a lot more than just resolution and frame rate. The diminutive FDR-X3000R's biggest claim is Balanced Optical SteadyShot (B.O.SS) image stabilization, which works across all resolutions and recording modes.

Debatable if this is a true competitor for GoPro - we don't think so! However, when a GoPro might be overkill for your needs, this is a great contender.
